New Discussion Board Feature: Accepted Solutions
Erica Kuhl Jan 28, 2009What is it?
Accepted solutions will help you identify content that solves your problems. Before this feature existed, you could see replies to discussion topics but there was no easy way to identify if a reply actually solved your issue. How do I use it?
If you've posted a question to a discussion board, you can now choose the reply that best answers your question and mark it as an accepted solution. To mark a solution as accepted:
1. If you're logged in, simply hit the "Solution?" icon on the reply if you think the message provides the solution:
2. The background and header color will change and this icon appears.
3. And this icon appears on the original question:
Hitting this will take you right to the reply that contains the solution. We also add a nice shading to the message that has been assigned as the Accepted Solution:
Finally, messages with accepted solutions are tagged in the message view as well:
If you change your change your mind about the quality of the answer, or if another reply provides an even better answer, you can revoke the first selection and accept the second reply. To revoke an accepted solution choose Options > Unmark Accepted Solution.
Best Practices
- If you start a discussion and someone posts an answer, please make sure to mark the answer as an accepted solution. This will really help others looking for answers.
- If you're browsing an old thread and you believe there is an accepted solution, please mark it!
- Please don't avoid questions that do not yet have accepted solutions - sometimes they have partial solutions, or they're desperately in need of your knowledge. Please help out.
- I've opened up this feature to all community members, not just the author of threads or moderators. Please take care and use it appropriately. Thanks!
