Blogging at Typepad Through Google Docs

Kingsley Joseph Oct 8, 2007

Microsoft Word has great formatting features, but it is an evil murderer of RSS/Atom feeds, as Feedburner is fond of reminding us bloggers. The native editing tools provided by Typepad generate clean markup, but are, shall we say, anemic? So if you run multiple blogs authored by many bloggers, it can be hard to take some one's favorite toy away from them. I've used & recommended Google docs as a compromise solution between a relatively full featured editor and clean markup. But when I looked for a good how-to guide on using Google Docs to blog at Typepad to send to our bloggers, I was aghast to find that the Internet had failed to produce one, yet. Not one to shirk the responsibility of correcting such a wanton omission, I set about making one.

  1. The first things you need are a Typepad account and a Google account. Both are fairly straight forward to set up, so I won't go into that. Once you have a Typepad blog and a Google Docs account, you're good on the Typepad side, as it is set up by default to allow you to post from a variety of other programs.
  2. Go to Google Docs' settings and click on "Edit Info" against Blog Settings.
  3. To configure Google Docs to target Typepad, select the "My own server/custom" radio-button, and select MovableType API from the API drop down list. Typepad's API URL is        http://www.typepad.com/t/api/xmlrpc.php. Then fill out the rest of the form with the specifics of your Typepad account.

That's it! The only disadvantage in using Google docs is that it only lets you configure and post to one blog at a time. Still, this should be more than adequate for most bloggers out there.
